When energetic particles of the plasma layer of the Sun collide with the upper atmosphere, the atoms and molecules of gases are excited and start to glow.
The luminous sky is the result of the work of charged particles of the solar wind. Plasma ejected from the Sun's corona forms the solar wind.
Solar wind could easily destroy all life on the Earth's surface, but we have the magnetosphere which protects us. Only in South and North Poles solar wind can come closer to our Earth. That’s why we can see the Polar lights there.
