al- Farabi Kazakh national university – milestones January 5, 1934 is the day of the official opening of Kazakh state university, which was established at the basis of the Pedagogical Institute by the decree of the Council of Peoples’ Commissars of USSR and VKPb Kazakh regional committee. On December 2 of the same year KazSU was named after the famous Soviet party and state leader S.M. Kirov.
The history of the University shows that each successful step, each scientific discovery, all the daily educational activities and innovative acquisition always have something of our past experiences and successes of today are based on tradition which have been founded throughout the 75-year history of KazNU, on the work of our predecessors and contemporaries whose names and achievements are an integral part of the Great history of our Alma mater, on sincere service to science and bold innovations made by the oldest university of the country. The staff and the university administration are convinced that the history is not just memory and the past, the history - with all its details and pages – is the basis for further forward progression of al- Farabi Kazakh National University into the future. Today al- Farabi Kazakh National University is a real city within the city, a showplace of the city of Almaty and a kind of a business-card of the city. The university, which is situated in an elite region on a territory covering a large amount of hectares, the university has all the necessary infrastructure and takes into account all the needs and necessities of the students: their study, life, sports, recreation, treatment and other aspects of students life. Being situated in such a huge city as Almaty, the campus of KazNU is well-known as one of the “greenest” parts of the city; its greenery counts 18 000 trees and take an area of 37 000 m 2. Educational and laboratory buildings are situated here, as well as library funds, dormitories, reading-rooms and Internet-cafés, multimedia and computer classes, U.A. Zholdasbekov Students’ Palace, a first-aid point, a feeding plant, sports complex, trade and production centers, cinema, post office, a center of public services etc.

Seven decades with advantage and honor the oldest educational institution of republic - the Kazakh national university of a name al- Farabi carries out the noble mission. It always was and remains to one of the centers of educational activity, the advanced scientific thought and creative aspirations. Geography – an integral part of structure of modern classical university education. As a part of university the geographical faculty for many years in Kazakhstan was the special division preparing broad specialists for educational, scientific and industrial establishments. On preparation of such experts activity of professorial-teaching collective of geographical faculty also is directed. Dormitories KazNU is a city for students. This is the place where the youth from all of the regions of the Republic studies. More than 5 000 students live in 13 renovated and comfortable KazNU dormitories which correspond to all modern requirements with a total square of 81 000 m 2. In order to resolve the whole range of problems of students, who live in the dormitory, a special body of student self-government has been established – the Higher student’s Council on dormitories.
